Obesity and diabetes mellitus are associated with a common pathogenic mechanism, and Mori folium is a potent inhibitor of intestinal glycosidases and inhibits the digestion of starch and sucrose in the small intestine. In this study, we the anti-hyperglycemic effect of prolonged treatment of obese diabetic mice (C57BLKsJ db/db) was observed using Mori folium mixed drink. The mice were supplied with the mixed drink (Drink 1 Group), a concentrated form of the drink (Drink 2 Group), and acarbose (Acarbose Group) for 5 weeks. Food intake and body weight gain were decreased significantly in Drink 1 and Drink 2 Groups (p<0.05). Furthermore, these groups exhibited lower levels of fasting serum glucose, Hb Alc, triglyceride, insulin, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and VLDL cholesterol compared with those in Control Group. However, HDL cholesterol level was increased. The activities of disaccharidases (maltase, lactase, sucrase) in the proximal and distal segments of the small intestine were decreased. It was concluded that the Mori folium mixed drink has an anti-hyperglycemic effect by reducing food intake and body weight gain and decreased the levels of serum glucose and triglyceride by inhibiting the activity of disaccharidases in the small intestine.
